Prioritising Mental Wellbeing

Mental health is a universal concern, affecting everyone to varying degrees. Just as our bodies need rest, our minds require ongoing care and attention. Prioritising mental well-being is not merely a luxury but a necessity for a fulfilling life. When we nurture our mental health, we enhance our ability to manage stress, foster meaningful relationships, and communicate effectively.

When supporting someone:

  • Normalise the conversation: Openly discussing emotional well-being is the first step towards removing the stigma associated with mental health. If someone seems hesitant to talk, initiate casual conversations about mental health in their presence. You can encourage them to gradually talk by creating a comfortable environment.
  • Listen actively, without judgment: When someone seeks your help, offer them your undivided attention. Put away distractions, listen intently to their experiences, and speak only when necessary, allowing them to express themselves fully. Maintain confidentiality and avoid gossiping, as this can worsen the situation.
  • Choose your words carefully: Avoid labelling or victimizing individuals facing mental health challenges. Be mindful of your language, offering reassurance and support rather than judgment or dominance.

If you are seeking help:

  • Cultivate self-awareness: Recognizing your own mental health needs is crucial. Ignoring signs of distress can exacerbate the problem. Acknowledge your feelings and take action to address them.
  • Express your feelings: While it may be difficult, articulating your emotions is often therapeutic. Share your experiences with trusted individuals, allowing them to offer support and understanding.
  • Confide in someone you trust: You can find someone to confide in whether it is a family member, a friend, a colleague, or a professional counsellor. Choose a communication method that feels comfortable for you, whether it is face-to-face conversations, text messages, or phone calls. Remember, bottling up your emotions only adds to the burden.

By breaking the silence surrounding mental health, we create a supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to seek help and prioritize their mental health and well-being.
