Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is a type of psychotherapy that helps individuals develop psychological flexibility. The goal is to create a rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes along with it.
Core Principles
ACT is based on six core principles that guide the therapeutic process:
- Acceptance: Rather than struggling against difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT encourages acceptance of these experiences as a natural part of life.
- Cognitive Defusion: This involves learning to observe thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them. Thoughts are seen as just thoughts, not absolute truths.
- Being Present: This involves focusing on the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
- Self as Context: This principle emphasizes that you are not defined by your thoughts, feelings, or experiences. You are the observer of these experiences.
- Values: Identifying your core values helps you create a life that is meaningful and fulfilling.
- Committed Action: This involves taking action towards your values, even in the face of difficult thoughts and feelings.
