Trauma Counselling Adelaide
We are all affected by many different types of traumatic events in our daily lives such as witnessing or being involved in a serious accident, war, a natural disaster, and sexual, emotional & physical abuse. The reason these events have such an impact on our lives is that they cause a threat of safety to us or others and this leads to Trauma.
We all respond differently to a traumatic event. What may have a significantly negative impact on one person’s life may be much less distressing for another person. The length of time it takes a person to recover from a traumatic event varies between people and there is no set time frame.
How we think, feel, and behave can be dramatically changed by the effect of Trauma on the body and the brain. We may experience intense, distressing, and ruminating thoughts, and we are likely to experience grief feelings such as shock, disbelief, fear, sadness, guilt and /or shame, depression, and anger. This can make it very hard to think clearly, concentrate or remember details and effect our ability to enjoy every day experiences.

The Impact Of Trauma
The experience of trauma can change our perspective in life, and this can lead us to feel lost, confused, and isolated. We may start feeling more stressed, anxious, and depressed, impacting negatively on our daily functioning such as sleeping, eating & drinking, working, maintaining relationships and other aspects of our lives. These are all normal reactions to a traumatic event which we all go through at some stage in life, and you need to give yourself time to recover and to be kind and compassion towards yourself.
It is important to look after yourself mentally & physically through a healthy diet, exercise, and sleep. Whenever possible engage the help of friends and family and let them offer you support. Daily relaxation methods such as mindfulness, meditation, walking, taking a bath, gardening, keeping a diary and listening to music can also help.
At Adelaide Counselling Practice we can teach you healthy coping strategies and provide you with coping tools. This can help you to make sense of things and feel better sooner. Our counsellors are friendly, supportive and they are professional, and highly qualified. Call (08) 8237 0509 to make an session. Sessions are available 7 days a week, between 9am and 9pm.
