The impact of Covid-19 on Family Life

The pandemic has had a severe impact on family life. Factors like job losses, school closures and mental health & well-being issues has led to many families experiencing greater stress and anxiety levels.

Some of these stressors which we have noticed in working with clients at Adelaide Counselling Practice include:

  • Involuntary loss of a job or the inability to get a job.
  • Rental, mortgage, and other financial stressors.
  • Grief & loss.
  • Relationship difficulties.
  • Parenting issues.
  • Confinement issues.
  • Dependency on smoking, alcohol, and other drugs.
  • Uncertainty about the future creating anxiety, depression & loneliness.
  • Mental and physical health issues.

These factors are putting a lot of strain on family dynamics and relationships, creating unhealthy and stressful environments for parents, children, and other family members.

The lines are now blurred between home and work life for a lot of families. Parents often must work around children who demand a lot of attention and are feeling bored. The continual pressures and distractions make everyone more agitated and feeling worn out.

These pressures make it challenging to maintain good communication levels between all parties and lead to more conflict and arguments. The tolerance levels of everyone in the family are continually being tested which makes for a pressure cooker environment.

A lack of social contact during lockdown and restrictions have also led to increased hostility between family members as they struggle to manage their emotions effectively.

Adapting to those new situations has made many people go back to unhealthy habits such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and using other drugs to cope with the stressors and pressure.

At Adelaide Counselling Practice we have caring, qualified and experienced counsellors who can help you with mental distress & emotional pain and provide you with coping tools and strategies to help improve your situation. They will listen to you and focus on achieving positive outcomes for you, your relationships with your partner and your family members.

Opening up about your issues helps you to identify what you need to work on. This can lead to positive & healthy outcomes for everyone involved. It can leave you feeling more in control, calmer and better able to handle stressful and challenging situations.
