A psychologist helps people who are struggling with more chronic and complex mental health disorders. A psychologist is qualified to assess someone’s mental health and through diagnostic or psychometric testing, provide therapeutic care and treatment. A GP can provide a Mental Health Care Plan to a patient who is then referred to a psychologist. Up to 10 individual sessions with a psychologist per calendar year are subsidised by Medicare and rebates are available to patients.

A counsellor assists people who are dealing with specific issues or who are generally struggling in their everyday lives. A counsellor provides guidance, education, and support to people and helps them to resolve their issues.  A counsellor often works with issues relating to anxiety, depression, stress, addiction, relationships, work-related concerns, grief, trauma, and abuse. Some private health funds such as BUPA & Medibank Private provide rebates to clients under their Extra policies.
